Creating new variables with SPSS

This tip has been tested with SPSS 13.0.1, but should work with all versions.

Creating several new variables of the same type can be done using the following SPSS syntax

COMPUTE new = 0.

which creates a new variable, with the value system missing. If need longer labels, use

VARIABLE LABELS new 'new_label'

See the SPSS help about related VARIABLE commands. If you are creating several variables at a time, it's better to generate the syntax string in an external application, e.g. in Excel.
